When I saw this pitch last week I could only cringe. The company is called Kronos Golf and they sell customized putters. Over the last twenty years as a patent attorney, the two most popular inventions to cross my desk are heated windshield wipers and improved golf putters. When I firsts became a patent attorney, I was told to expect inventions on improved toilets but that has yet to materialize. Instead, I’ve seen every imaginable variation on a golf club.
I’m not sure what it is with golf related patents, but there are a ton of them out there. I have only had one client, TJ Izzo, who ever made any money on a golfing related patent. His double strap golf back was really something innovative. It takes something like that to be able to break into this market.
My point is that if you come up with a new way to make a golf club, don’t count in making any money. I was glad to see that Mr. Wonderful does have some compassion, putting up a few of his previous dollars to help out an inventor in need. Having said that, my experience tells me that his putter will be nothing but a money pit. Looking on the bright side, however, the experience can only help him when he comes up with his next big idea.
