There’s been a lot in the press about having your financial records hacked, especially your credit cards. I was one of the unlucky ones that got hacked in the Target scam. I spoke with some of our data breach attorneys at the firm, and they confirmed that every day several retailers are getting their customers credit cards stolen. Not a comforting thought.

But what about your medical records? I think this is even worse. What’s my inside information on this? A couple of years ago, I got a personal fax number and all my faxes now come to my email as a pdf so I don’t need someone to run them down from our fax room. It seems that I got a recycled fax number because I immediately started getting dozens of unwanted faxes. At first, I just deleted them. But when they kept rolling in, I got annoyed. So I started reading some of them. Turns out, they are almost all from doctors or surgery centers. Why they are sending them to me, I have no idea. But they have all kinds of interesting information, like what kind of joint is being replaced, testing data, blood work, bills—you get the idea.

To stop the onslaught, I had my office manager start calling them to inform them that they had a wrong fax number and they probably didn’t want me seeing information on all their patients and doctors. The result? It’s gotten worse. I can’t stop it.

So, I’ve decided to start posting the offenders in hopes they will get a clue. (Perhaps they aren’t the ones sending them, but they need to know someone has access to their systems). I was going to put down the patients names as well, or even post the offending faxes, but I figured that wouldn’t be too cool. So, I’m just going to post the names of the doctors and medical facilities. If you go to one of these, you may want to call them up and ask them why they can’t keep their patient information confidential. And, maybe the can stop the unrelenting flow of faxes to my computer.
