I saw the clip about Under the Weather a few weeks ago on Shark Tank. They sell these really cool pods that you can use when you go to your kids sporting events. You can see the game without being exposed to the weather. Here is a link to their site.
When they asked Rick Pescovitz about whether he had any patents, he replied that he had several. However, they were design patents. I looked them up and he has lots of them. I’ve included them below. I was glad to see that Rick took advantage of design patents. They are great for products like this. They protect their overall design or shape of an object, like the shape of a Coke bottle. Because these pods all have a unique shape, design patents are a really good option. And, the beauty of design patents is that you can get one for a few thousand dollars, rather than $20,000 to $30,000 for a utility patent.
